If you love dogs, no matter your age, youll love this book.A 5-Star Review:Reviewer: Rietto - - September 10, 2009Subject: A look back at the dog and human bondVintage photos of people with their pet dogs, and anecdotes...............................................................................From the books Preface:In the past two years I have made clippings from a few news-papers how many more thousands could have been obtainedshowing the devotion, bravery, and intelligence of animals, especially dog and cats. Dogs have saved people fromdrowning, houses from burning, died of grief for their lovedones, and yet all over the country our laws concerning thesefaithful creatures are brutal. We tax them out of all proportion to their money value. Welet them starve and freeze with no apparent interest, and ifhomeless, or an unjust tax is not paid, we encourage theftand cruelty by offering twenty-five cents apiece to have themcaught on the streets and taken to dog pounds, or we empowerpolice or societies to kill them by poison, or gun, or the fumes ofsulphur or gas. Lost creatures, petted and fondles by somechild, instead of being buried after death are thrown into garbagewagons, with no thought of tenderness, or decency. We care for idiots and insane and idssolute, and forget creaturesof rare intelligence, temperate and trustworthy. We arrogateto ourselves the thought that we alone of all created things havesouls, and that we alone can enter heaven. How do we knowall this?We cruelly destroy birds by the millions for our personal adorning-we let cats starve on the streets because we do not wish to haveany cares- we wantonly hurt and leave dying on the great plainsthousands of buffaloes- we kill by savage methods elephantswhose intelligence seems sometimes above the human- we arehorrified at bullfights, yet we tear deer and foxes and rabbitsto pieces with dogs in so-called sport. Are we forever to goon without mercy for our dumb friends?Sarah K.
